Reception

Welcome to Reception!

Reception is lead by Miss Humphery and she is supported by Debbie Jackson.

Children in our Reception class will undertake a range of learning activities which are assessed, planned and developed under the following headings:

The 3 Prime Areas:

•    Personal, Social and Emotional Development
•    Communication and Language
•    Physical Development

The 4 Specific Areas:

•    Literacy
•    Mathematics
•    Understanding the World
•    Expressive Arts and Design

We believe that in  Reception children should learn through a balance of child initiated play and adult directed activities. we believe in supporting and guiding each individual child's development to their full potential therefore our Reception class promotes the characteristics of effective learning which are:- Playing and exploring, Active learning and Creating and thinking critically.

Throughout Reception we assess daily through observations using an electronic program ‘2simple’ which improves the quality and consistency of formative and summative assessment. These observations are shared with the parents half termly via email.

During Reception we aim to provide a print rich learning environment for our pupils and to encourage them to make marks in all areas of the curriculum. A daily shared Literacy session will take place alongside a weekly adult led writing activity.

Children begin taking home books to read with parents and carers within the first weeks of school and are linked directly to our daily phonics sessions which are supported by the ‘Letters and sounds’ and ‘Jolly phonics’ scheme. We use the Collins Big Cat reading scheme books.
