Intent: Our Vision for Every Pupil
At Prendergast Vale, we ignite a passion for mathematics through an ambitious, interconnected curriculum tailored for every learner. We don’t just teach procedures; we cultivate mathematical thinkers who possess the fluency to calculate, the reason to justify, and the resilience to tackle the unknown.
We empower our pupils to be:
-
Visualisers: Harnessing the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) journey to turn complexity into clarity and build unshakable conceptual foundations.
-
Describers: Mastering mathematical language allows our pupils to move beyond "getting the answer" to articulating the why behind the way.
-
Experimenters: By identifying patterns and weaving links across the curriculum, our pupils see maths not as a list of topics, but as a universal language of discovery.
Implementation: Mathematics in Action
Our curriculum is delivered through the White Rose Maths Scheme which is a mastery-led approach, ensuring that concepts are explored in depth rather than rushed through. We translate our intent into the classroom through three specific pedagogical strands:
The Visualisation Strategy (CPA)
We ensure that every new concept is introduced through a physical or visual lens before moving to abstract symbols.
-
Concrete: Pupils use physical manipulatives to "feel" the mathematics.
-
Pictorial: Pupils use visual models (like the Bar Model) to bridge the gap between objects and numbers.
-
Abstract: Once the concept is "seen," we move to formal written methods, ensuring symbols are grounded in reality.
Mathematical Oracy
A Prendergast Vale classroom is a "talk-rich" environment where mathematical language is treated as a core literacy skill.
-
Sentence Stems: We provide scaffolds to help pupils articulate their reasoning.
-
Precision Vocabulary: Key mathematical vocabulary is introduced and used consistently by staff and pupils.
-
Justification: Children are encouraged to explain their thinking.
Reasoning & Problem Solving
We move beyond rote learning by embedding "low threshold, high ceiling" tasks that allow every child to explore.
-
Pattern Seeking: Curiosity is encouraged and opportunities to find patterns are given to demystify the maths
-
Productive Struggle: We celebrate "wrong" answers as vital data points and provide non-routine problems that require testing hypotheses.
Impact: Measuring Success
The impact of our curriculum is that pupils leave us as mathematically literate individuals capable of navigating the modern world. We measure this through:
-
Mathematical Mastery: Pupils demonstrate deep, long-term understanding, evidenced by their ability to apply skills across different contexts.
-
Articulate Reasoning: Through book looks and pupil voice, pupils demonstrate they can use precise vocabulary to justify their thinking.
-
Resilience & Confidence: Pupils show a "can-do" attitude toward challenge. They do not give up when faced with unfamiliar problems; they experiment and pivot.
-
Consistent Achievement: Pupils meet and exceed age-related expectations, with the gap narrowing between different learner groups due to our inclusive, high-aspiration approach.
