Our Curriculum Intent
At Prendergast Vale Primary, our PSHE and RSE curriculum is designed to empower pupils to become resilient, informed, and responsible citizens. We recognise that our children are growing up in an increasingly complex, ever-connected world; therefore, our intent is to provide them with a "toolkit for life" that prioritises emotional intelligence, physical wellbeing, and personal safety.
By integrating the 1decision framework, we ensure our curriculum is not just a series of lessons, but a progressive journey of self-discovery. Our intent is to:
-
Foster Agency: To give pupils the confidence to make independent, safe, and healthy choices.
-
Build Resilience: To provide the vocabulary and emotional literacy needed to navigate challenges, both online and offline.
-
Promote Inclusion: To nurture an environment of mutual respect, where every pupil understands their rights and responsibilities within a diverse community, reflecting modern British Values.
-
Guarantee Safety: To ensure every pupil knows how to identify risks and, crucially, how to seek help from trusted adults.
Through this "spiral" approach, we bridge the gap between academic success and personal development, ensuring our pupils leave the primary phase ready to thrive in their transition to secondary school and the wider world.
Implementation & Impact Summary
To ensure this intent is realised, our curriculum is mapped against the Statutory Guidance for Relationships and Health Education.
-
Implementation: We use the 1decision thematic map to ensure full coverage of the EYFS, KS1, and KS2 frameworks. Lessons are adapted to our local context in Lewisham, ensuring they are relevant to our pupils' lived experiences.
-
Impact: We measure success not just through recorded work, but through the "voice of the pupil"—observing how our children interact, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate empathy across the school day.
School Council are elected democratically at the beginning of the year. They meet with a member of SLT at least once every half term. School Council support with creating charity campaigns for our Harvest and Christmas Food drive and collect the food from classmates and support with the hand-over to Lewisham Food Bank. Additionally, they, alongside others, visit Alexander Care Home three times a year to sing songs and deliver cards to the residents. School Council also have the opportunity to meet visitors and share their experiences of their learning.
